When Roy Burge returned to Oakland after serving as a sergeant with the 865th Aviation Engineers Battalion in the New Guinea and Philippine campaigns during World War II, he founded Burge Pest Control right here in the city. Recognizing Termite Activity in Your Home

Oakland’s Bay Area climate supports three termite species: subterranean termites, which live in the soil and travel up into wood through mud tubes built along foundations; drywood termites, which nest inside the wood itself and leave behind small pellet-like droppings; and dampwood termites, which favor wood with high moisture content. Each species behaves differently and requires a different response.

Understanding a California WDO Inspection Report

California’s Wood Destroying Organism (WDO) report uses a state-prescribed standardized form administered under the Structural Pest Control Act. It covers termites, wood-boring beetles, carpenter ants, and wood decay fungus. Most mortgage lenders require a completed WDO inspection before approving a home loan, making this report a routine part of real estate transactions in Oakland.

One point worth knowing before your inspection: California termite inspections are non-destructive. Inspectors don’t open walls, pull up carpet, or remove tile to look for damage. The inspection covers what’s visible and accessible.

The report separates findings into two categories:

Section 1 covers evidence of active infestation or existing damage that requires correction
Section 2 covers conducive conditions, such as excessive moisture or wood-to-soil contact, that don’t show active infestation now but could lead to one
