Recognizing an Aphid Infestation

Aphids are small, soft-bodied insects that feed on plant sap. They tend to cluster on new growth, along stems, and on the undersides of leaves, where they can go unnoticed until populations are already large. Oakland’s mild climate keeps plants producing new foliage for much of the year, which means aphids often stay active longer here than in harsher climates.

One of the more reliable early signs is honeydew, a sticky substance aphids excrete as they feed. It coats leaves and surfaces below infested plants, and when it builds up, it encourages black sooty mold that can further stress plants. Ants are also attracted to honeydew, so unusual ant activity around a shrub or tree is worth a closer look.

Other signs to watch for on your plants and landscaping:

Curling or yellowing leaves on new growth
Stunted shoots that fail to develop normally
Sticky residue on foliage or surfaces below the plant
Clusters of small insects on stems or leaf undersides

Aphids reproduce rapidly and can cycle through several generations in a single growing season. They can also transmit plant viruses between host plants, which is why early intervention matters. Roses, vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and ornamental shrubs are among the most commonly affected plants in the area.
